Types of Tooth Stains

Teeth can stain overtime with everything that you eat or drink. Coffee, tea, wine or dark colored soda such as cola can stain your teeth. There are three different types of stain.

  • Extrinsic Stains: From the food you eat, the particles can build up on the surfaces of teeth. These stains on the outer surface of teeth are extrinsic stains.
  • Intrinsic Stains: They are the stains from food or drink or tobacco that penetrate through the outer layer of enamel and accumulate within enamel.
  • Age related Stain: Teeth can appear more yellow with age due to darkening of dentin, the inner layer of tooth and thinning of enamel, most outer layer of tooth.

Extrinsic stains can easily be removed with regular cleaning and whitening toothpaste. However, intrinsic stain as well as age-related stains cannot be removed unless the whitening ingredient is able to penetrate through the enamel to chemically remove the stain.

Is it bad to whiten your teeth?

Teeth whitening is not harmful to your teeth or your body. The most common side effect of whitening your teeth is temporary sensitivity and gum irritation. This is due to the internal tubules of the teeth being open, allowing the whitening ingredients to penetrate and whiten teeth. Patients who have tried our in office whitening system have been very satisfied because they didn’t have any sensitivity or gum irritation even right after the whitening treatment!
